Francis Howell Central Spartan Basketball

The Howell Central Spartan basketball program was established in 1997. During the 97-98 school year, the basketball program consisted of only freshmen and sophomores.  They competed with a mixed schedule of JV and Varsity contests.  By the 1998-99 season, the Spartans were a full varsity squad made up of juniors and sophomores.  They completed their first varsity season with a record of 7-19, and they won their first district game 79-76 against Bowling Green HS.  Since the first season, the Spartans have won more than 250 games competing against teams from St. Charles County, St. Louis County, and throughout the Mid-West.  One of the many highlights that helped establish Spartan basketball as an elite program came during the 2004 season when the Spartans were invited to play in the KMOX Shootout at the Savvis Center in St. Louis.  At that showcase the Spartans defeated a nationally renowned program from Dallas Oak Cliff 66-58.  The Spartans later finished that 2004-05 campaign by winning their first district title against CBC (Christian Borthers College) 77-73. Later that season, the Spartans met up with nationally ranked Vashon HS (Stl, MO) in the state quarter final game and lost 67-46. Vashon went on to place second in the state tournament.

Larry Anders was the first head coach in the history of Francis Howell Central (1997-2019).  He graduated from Mehlville HS where he was a three sport varsity athlete (baseball, football, and basketball).  He continued his basketball career at Florissant Valley Community College playing for his father, Paul, who coached basketball at FLO Valley for more than 30 years.  Coach Anders compiled a career record of 250-305 (.450).  He was voted Coach of the Year by his peers in 2005.  Larry currently teaches business classes at Francis Howell High School.  In addition to teaching, he is the sponsor of DECA where he continues to develop business leaders in the community.

The current head coach is Brian Cissell.  The 2019-20 season will be his first as the varsity boys basketball head coach.  He has been on the Spartan coaching staff for 21 years where he coached all three levels within the program.  Brian has coached more than 50 seasons at Howell Central over the 22 history of the school.  He has coached baseball at FHC since 1997.  He has also coached on the football staff, was an assistant girls basketball coach, and was the head softball coach when he won Coach of the Year honors in 2013.  Currently, he is the assistant varsity baseball coach and sponsors the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  Brian is married to Tammy Cissell.  They have three boys: Kaleb, Kade, and Kannon- all who have played, are playing, or have graduated from Francis Howell Central High School.
